SHOPPING
Even our guests who do not make a habit of shopping on holiday do seem to depart with an extra suitcase or ask us to arrange international shipping, which The Chedi Chiang Mai’s Concierge team is happy to arrange. Meander over to the Night Bazaar just a few steps from our grounds for an introduction to Northern Thai souvenirs and kitsch plus a few serious antique outlets. For items with more style, however, hop a taxi or tuk-tuk to Nimmanhaemin Road, where young Chiang Mai clothing designers and artisans have opened kaleidoscopic shops offering original designs at reasonable prices.
Join the throngs of Thais every weekend evening at the Saturday and Sunday markets, a short tuk-tuk ride from the hotel. These festive street fairs are crammed with stalls selling handmade local souvenirs, ethnic hill tribe fabrics reworked into handbags and sandals, intricate silver jewelry plus delectable street eats such as sweet corn, fresh juices and even a sidewalk sushi counter. Those in search of hand-carved furniture, Southeast Asian antiques and serious home décor should organise a car and driver with our Concierge to Baan Tawai, where showrooms and warehouses full of local treasures await you.
