SIGHTSEEING
Every area of Bali deserves a visit, but travellers tight on time should still explore beyond Ubud. Take the scenic drive up to the cooler climate of Kintamani for a boat ride on Batur Lake, the largest lake in Bali – it sits inside the crater of Mount Batur, alongside a still-active volcano.
Cross the lake by boat to Trunyan village, where Bali Aga people, the island’s original inhabitants live. Or head east to climb Mount Agung, Bali’s highest peak and see, along its slopes, the multi-tiered 14th century Pura Besakih mother temple. Stop by the mountain village of Tenganan, known for its unique double ikat weaving and smoked grass woven baskets, before heading back to your rice paddy retreat.
