Balinese Art and Culture

Ubud-bound explorers should begin their sightseeing adventure at the Ubud Palace, the former home of the last King of Ubud, located at the town’s central crossroads and host to nightly dance performances on a gilded hand-carved platform above the grand gardens. Animal lovers may also wish to visit the nearby sacred monkey forest.

Ubud boasts nearly as many museums as temples. Those worth visiting include the Neka Museum for Balinese and Indonesian art, the Blanco Renaissance Museum, the Rudana, Puri Lukisan and ARMA Museum, the latter particularly on full and new moons for classic Balinese Cak Rina dance.

Shadow puppetry and fire dance performances fill the evening calendar up here while special events in Ubud include the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival held every October.
